Every docking video shows a different technique because every boat, berth and breeze is different. What never changes is the physics. ASA's docking standard opens by asking candidates to describe the boat's characteristics — hull and keel shape, prop hand, pivot point, rudder, windage — because those, plus wind and current, decide what any technique can do. Learn the forces, then plan; do not collect tricks.

The five forces

  • Momentum. A boat has no brakes; it carries its way, and heavy boats carry it a long time. All slow-speed handling is managing momentum you created seconds ago. Approach at bare steerage, use neutral liberally, and use short bursts of astern as your brake — remembering the brake also steers (see prop walk).
  • Steerage. The rudder works only when water flows over it — from the boat moving, or from prop wash in forward. Below steerage way the rudder is furniture, but a burst of forward throttle with the helm over kicks the stern sideways even with no speed: prop wash steering, the single most useful move in a marina.
  • Windage. Wind pushes the boat downwind, and it pushes hardest on the tallest, lightest end — on most sailboats the bow, which falls off the wind at low speed while the keel and rudder hold the stern. Expect the bow to blow off; plan for it instead of fighting it. Wind is your brake when you approach into it, and your accelerator when it is behind.
  • The pivot point. A boat turns about a point roughly a third of the way aft from the bow when moving ahead — so the stern swings wide (watch it in turns) — and the point moves aft when making sternway, so in reverse the boat pivots near the stern and the bow swings. This is why a boat backs so differently from how it drives.
  • Prop wash and prop walk. Wash: the rudder deflects the forward thrust stream, giving steering kicks without speed (no equivalent in reverse — the stream goes forward, missing the rudder). Walk: the sideways component of the prop's thrust — with a right-handed prop, stern to port in astern. Know your boat's direction: in open water, stop, apply astern, and watch which way the stern goes.

What to notice: A right-handed prop (clockwise ahead, viewed from astern): slight stern-to-starboard going ahead, pronounced stern-to-port going astern — strongest just as you apply power before sternway builds. Left-handed props mirror everything. This is why single-screw boats prefer a port-side-to berth: the walk tucks the stern in as you brake.

Planning beats reacting

  1. Read the wind and any current at the berth itself — flags, ripples, other boats' lines. Decide which way they will push you during the last, slowest metres.
  2. Decide the approach angle and side-to. Into wind or current if you can, prop walk tucking you in if you can choose the side.
  3. Brief the crew: which line goes ashore first, to which cleat, and that nobody jumps or fends with a limb. On short-handed boats a midships line or spring first controls everything.
  4. Rig lines and fenders both sides if unsure. It costs two minutes and removes half the drama.
  5. Plan the escape before you commit: at what point, and with what turn, can you abandon and go around? A go-around is a professional manoeuvre, not a failure — every good docking plan contains one.

The four standard situations

What to notice: The plan changes with the wind. Onto the dock: shallow and slow, let the wind finish it. Off the dock: steeper and more positive, bow line first. Along the dock: approach into wind so it brakes you. Leaving with wind pinning you on: motor against a bow spring to swing the stern out, then back away.

  • Wind blowing onto the dock: approach at a shallow angle, stop parallel a metre off, and let the wind put you alongside — your job is only to kill way in time and have fenders down. The risk is arriving fast; the wind adds its own final shove.
  • Wind blowing off the dock: the bow will blow away the moment you slow. Approach more steeply (30–45°), keep way on longer, and get the bow line or a midships spring ashore first, then drive gently against it to bring the stern in. Half-hearted approaches end drifting backwards across the fairway.
  • Cross-wind along the dock: approach into the wind component if there is a choice — it is a brake. Expect the bow to fall off in the last metres and aim slightly upwind of your spot.
  • Leaving with wind (or a neighbour) pinning you: springs. Bow spring, engine slow ahead, helm towards the dock, good bow fender — the stern swings out; then neutral, slip the spring, and back away. Mirror it (stern spring, engine astern) to take the bow out where the boat's shape favours that. The RYA's teaching sequence is exactly this, and it works with two crew or one.

What to notice: Springing off: the engine pushes the boat forward, the spring stops it, and the only motion left available is rotation — the stern walks out against the fender. Thrust plus restraint equals controlled turn; that is the entire theory of springs.

Going astern without drama

  • Get sternway before you steer: rudders bite late in reverse, and prop walk dominates until water flows past the blade. A confident half-second burst astern, then ease off, beats prolonged tentative throttle (which is pure walk, no steerage).
  • Use the walk: if your stern walks to port, plan reversing turns to port; back out of the slip the way the boat wants to go, then drive forward out of the awkward direction.
  • Once moving astern, steer with small helm — the pivot point is now aft and the bow swings widely; watch it near neighbours.
  • If it goes wrong: stop squarely — neutral, then ahead with helm over (prop wash) to point the bow somewhere safe, and start again. Never let a bad line-up continue just because you announced it.

Do not fight the walk with sustained astern — you will crab to port towards the neighbours. Options, in order: back out in bursts (power for seconds, then coast in neutral so walk stops but sternway continues, steering as flow builds); or accept the walk, back to port, and use prop-wash bursts ahead with the helm hard over to rotate the bow once clear; or rig a stern spring and let it hold the stern while a touch of astern points you. Choose before slipping lines, brief it, and know that neighbours' bows are your abort cue — stop square and restart rather than improvising mid-fairway.

Motor gently ahead against the spring with the helm turned away from the dock (rudder pushing the stern toward it). The spring stops forward motion, so the thrust becomes rotation: the boat pivots on the line, the stern swings in, and the boat lies alongside pinned by her own engine while other lines go on at leisure. This is the same physics as springing off, run in reverse — thrust against restraint equals controlled rotation.
