Exam preparation

What the syllabus asks, how the assessment usually works, and how to study for it.

Knowing the theory and being ready for the assessment are different problems. These guides explain how the common theory assessments are structured, what the questions tend to ask, and how to plan revision so nothing on the syllabus is a surprise on the day. There is a study guide for ASA 101 Keelboat Sailing 1, built from the published standard and paired with a free practice test, and one for RYA Day Skipper theory.

Theory assessments reward the same few habits regardless of scheme. Work through the whole syllabus once before drilling anything, so you know where your gaps actually are. Practise chartwork and tidal calculations on paper under time pressure — they are the topics where understanding the method and executing it quickly are furthest apart. And return to the questions you got wrong after a few days rather than immediately; if you still get them right later, you have learned them rather than memorised the answer.

Exam formats vary by school and change over time — always confirm the details with your training centre.

Ready to test yourself? The Day Skipper Theory, Actually Explained course turns these topics into 1,000+ practice questions with explanations.
