Answer: A. The left side
Port and starboard are fixed sides of the vessel. When facing the bow, port is left and starboard is right, regardless of wind direction.
Answer: A. The sail moves farther out
A sheet controls the angle of a sail relative to the boat. Easing pays out line and lets the sail move away from the centerline; trimming pulls it in.
Answer: B. The sails cannot produce useful driving force
Inside the no-sail zone, airflow does not remain attached in a way that creates useful lift. The sails luff, so the boat must sail at an angle and tack to make progress upwind.
Answer: B. Check all around and communicate
A proper lookout and clear communication reduce surprise. Check for vessels and hazards, tell the crew what is about to happen, then maneuver deliberately.
Answer: A. Sideways motion
The keel provides underwater lateral resistance. Together with the force generated by the sails, this allows the boat to make controlled forward progress rather than simply sliding downwind.
