Privacy Policy

The short version

ArcoMeter is a GPS speedometer and trip-recording app for iPhone and iPad. It shows your live speed, records trips, and lets you review saved trips with a route map, speed and elevation charts, and summary statistics.

ArcoMeter is built so your trips stay on your device. It does not require an account, does not ask for your name or email, and does not send your location, routes, trip names, or trip files to us for analytics or advertising. The app collects limited anonymous usage analytics so we can understand which features are used and improve the product. You can turn this off in Settings.

Who operates ArcoMeter

ArcoMeter is developed and operated by SailQuiz, an independent developer based in the Netherlands (“ArcoMeter”, “we”, “us”, “our”).

This policy covers the ArcoMeter mobile app. If you are reading it on our website, your use of the website itself is also covered by the website privacy policy.

Permissions ArcoMeter requests

ArcoMeter requests location access, which is essential to its purpose:

• Location while using the app — to read GPS and show your live speed.
• Background / “Always” location — only used while you are actively recording a trip, so the recording can continue when the screen is locked or the app is in the background. On Android, an active recording shows a persistent notification while location is in use.

ArcoMeter does not request access to your contacts, photos, microphone, camera, calendar, health data, or any advertising identifier. You can change or revoke location access at any time in your device's Settings.

How location data is used

When the app is open, ArcoMeter reads GPS updates from your device to calculate and display your current speed. When you start a recording, it additionally stores each location point so it can build the trip's route, distance, speed, and elevation. This processing happens on your device. We do not receive this data.

What is stored on your device

The following trip data and app settings are stored locally on your device, in the app's own storage. Your saved trips and GPS points are not transmitted to us or to any analytics provider.

Recorded trips

Saved recordings are kept in a local database on your device. For each trip this includes a summary (start and end time, duration, distance, maximum and average speed, moving time, and sample count) and the individual GPS points that make up the trip. Each point can include latitude, longitude, speed, altitude, GPS accuracy, heading, and a timestamp.

App settings

Your preferences are stored locally, including: speed unit (km/h, mph, knots, or m/s), screen-orientation preference, speed-calibration offset, overspeed-alert threshold, dial maximum, and the HUD mirror setting. The app also stores two small operational values on your device — a flag recording whether the App Store rating prompt has already been shown, and a count of how many times the app has been opened — which are used only to decide when to show the optional rating prompt. The app also stores your analytics preference (on or off). These values stay on your device.

Anonymous usage analytics

ArcoMeter uses PostHog to collect limited anonymous product analytics. We use this to understand how the app is used, which features are useful, where users may get stuck, and which improvements to prioritize.

Analytics events can include app lifecycle events (for example app opened), screen names, feature interactions (for example starting or stopping a recording, opening the route map, exporting a trip, using HUD mode, or changing a setting), broad buckets such as trip duration or distance ranges, app/device technical information such as app version, operating system, device type, locale/time zone, and an anonymous device-level identifier used by PostHog to count usage over time.

Analytics events do notinclude GPS coordinates, saved route geometry, trip names, exported trip files, your name, email address, contacts, photos, microphone, camera, payment details, or advertising identifier. We do not use this analytics data for advertising, do not sell it, and do not use it to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.

You can turn anonymous analytics off at any time in ArcoMeter's Settings. When analytics is off, the app tells PostHog to opt out and stops sending analytics events from that device.

Maps (route display)

When you view a trip's route, ArcoMeter draws it on a map using your device's built-in mapping component. On iPhone and iPad this is Apple Maps (MapKit); on Android it is Google Maps. To render the map, the relevant map provider loads map imagery and processes the coordinates needed to display the area, under its own privacy terms. See Apple's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy. ArcoMeter does not send your saved trips to these providers; the map simply renders the route on your screen.

App Store rating prompt

ArcoMeter may occasionally ask you to rate the app using Apple's standard, built-in rating dialog (StoreKit). The app only calls Apple's system feature; it does not collect, store, or transmit your rating or any related information. Any rating you submit is handled by Apple under Apple's terms.

Exporting trips (GPX / CSV)

You can export a saved trip as a GPX or CSVfile. When you do, ArcoMeter writes the file to the app's temporary storage and opens your device's share sheet so you can choose where it goes (for example Files, Mail, Messages, or another app). The export contains your trip data — coordinates, timestamps, speed, elevation, accuracy, and heading.

Exporting is always initiated by you. Once you share a file, the destination you choose (and any app or service that receives it) handles that file under its own terms, outside ArcoMeter's control.

What ArcoMeter does not do

• No accounts, sign-in, name, or email — ArcoMeter does not ask for or store any account or contact details.
• No advertising SDKs, advertising identifier access, or cross-app / cross-website tracking.
• No automatic upload, cloud sync, or backup — your trips and GPS points are not sent to any server by the app.
• No selling or sharing of personal information.

Deleting your data & data retention

Your trips remain on your device until you delete them. You can delete an individual trip by swiping it in the trip list or using the delete action on the trip's detail screen. Deleting the ArcoMeter app from your device removes all of its locally stored trips and settings.

Because we never receive your trips, location, or trip settings, there is no copy of that data held by us to retain or delete on a server. Anonymous analytics data is retained by PostHog for us according to our PostHog project settings and is used only for product analytics.

Storage & security

Your trip data is stored within the app's storage on your own device and is protected by your device's built-in security (such as your passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, and the operating system's data protection). ArcoMeter does not add a separate encryption layer of its own. Anonymous analytics events are transmitted to PostHog over HTTPS. Keeping your device updated and protected with a passcode helps keep your on-device data safe.

Your privacy rights (EU/UK and California)

ArcoMeter processes your location and trip data only on your device, under your control. We do not collect, receive, or have access to your saved trips or GPS points, so for that data we do not act as a “data controller” (GDPR) or “business” (CCPA/CPRA) — you manage it directly on your device. For anonymous usage analytics, SailQuiz is the controller/business and PostHog acts as our service provider/processor.

EU/UK (GDPR/UK GDPR): Because we do not receive your saved trips or GPS points, there is no server copy of that trip data for us to access, correct, export, or erase. You can exercise full control over your trip data on your device (view, export, or delete trips, and uninstall the app). You can also turn anonymous analytics off in Settings. If you believe we hold any personal data about you, contact us and we will respond.

California (CCPA/CPRA): ArcoMeter does not sell your personal information and does not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We collect limited anonymous usage analytics for product improvement only. You can turn analytics off in Settings or contact us with privacy requests.

Note that the device map providers (Apple, Google) and any destination you choose when exporting a file act independently under their own privacy policies.

Children's privacy

ArcoMeter is a general-audience utility app and is not directed at children. It does not require an account and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. If you have questions about children's privacy, contact us at [email protected].

Safety & accuracy disclaimer

ArcoMeter is provided for informational and personal tracking purposes only. It is not a certified, calibrated, or officially approved measuring instrument.

• GPS-based speed, distance, elevation, and route data may be inaccurate, delayed, incomplete, or unavailable. Accuracy can be affected by your device and its sensors, satellite coverage, tunnels, buildings, terrain, weather, battery-saver and other operating-system settings, and similar factors.
• ArcoMeter must notbe used as your primary or legally required speed indicator. Always rely on your vehicle's official instruments and follow all local laws and road and traffic rules.
• It is not a replacement for vehicle instruments, official speed indicators, marine instruments, aviation instruments, railway systems, navigation systems, or any safety-critical equipment, and it is not certified for road, rail, aviation, marine, or official measurement use.
• Do not interact with the app while driving or operating a vehicle. You are responsible for the safe and lawful use of the app at all times.

Do not rely on ArcoMeter as the sole source of speed, navigation, distance, elevation, or safety information, and do not use it in any situation where an inaccurate or unavailable reading could create a risk of harm, legal violation, or property damage.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Significant changes may also be noted in the app or its App Store listing.
